Show HN: You had a productive day, until now
- dreamer7 6y agoPretty cool game! I had to stop playing after a while as people around me were starting to wonder where the "Oh yeaahh!" was coming from.
- crehn 6y agoThe "oh yeah" has a sexual intonation to it; it's perfect.
- Jemaclus 6y agoAgreed. It was less of a celebratory "oh yeah" and more of a moaning "oh yeah", which felt a little uncomfortable while playing a non-sensual game. There was a button in the bottom right that had an ear on it, and I thought it might mute the sound, but it just turned on music. I wound up having to mute the tab in Chrome (right-click tab, click "Mute Site") in order to play with more comfort.
- jboggan 6y agoThe ability to rotate pieces would really increase the difficulty factor.
- tmaly 6y agoHonest question, is this a hidden sales funnel for the defonic app? This little popup in the bottom left pushed out the words more awesomeness and I clicked it. A new windows opened up to the defonic app website
- dubcanada 6y agoI think the obvious answer is yes.
- thecodrr 6y agoCool concept. The 'oh yeah' was a nice (or not nice :D) touch.
- saagarjha 6y agoIt’s sadly a little too big for my iPhone SE :(
- SuperPaintMan 6y agoSame for my BlackBerry Key2, still playable but the top area is obscured
- koala_man 6y ago>You had a productive day I appreciate that you thought that
- rojcyk 6y agoIt would get unproductive but since you cannot turn the sound off, it stayed productive.
- rottencupcakes 6y agohttps://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-mute-entire-websites-in-chrome/ https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-mute-entire-websites-in-c...
- croisillon 6y agoi like that Chrome users, like formerly IE users, need special instructions to do what Firefox users can do very simply
- reaperducer 6y agoOr Safari. Just click the little blue speaker icon in the URL bar.
- alpb 6y agono you actually don't. you can right click any tab and mute it.
- ars 6y agoI too ceased playing because of the sound. Barely funny the first time or two, it was just irritating after that. (Yes, I know I could mute the site, but by then the appeal of the game was over.)
- dariusj18 6y agoI was able to mute it, there are controls hidden at the bottom.
- 6510 6y agoWho would have thought the ear icon mutes the sound.
- phobosanomaly 6y agoReminds me of playing with tangrams as a kid. Surprisingly, still pretty damn fun.
- drcongo 6y agoI'd never heard of tangrams until one day, many many years ago, I stumbled across a tangram book at a second hand shop, bought it, and built a Flash tangram game thing in Flash 4 (with all the pain that coding Flash 4 entailed). When Flash 5 came out I rewrote it with the ability to save your creations. It was quite popular for a while.
- kthartic 6y agoGreat game, but I'm really confused as to who made it. I clicked nearly everything on the screen and couldn't see an author anywhere
- swyx 6y agothere are credits on the bottom left https://theblocks.netlify.app/credits.html https://theblocks.netlify.app/credits.html
- das_keyboard 6y agoBut this does not list any credits for the actual game... Looking at the websites sources the actual game-code (powerblocks.js) was apparently written in 2016 by Danijel Durakovic (who is not mentioned in the credits...) But I could not find anything about the games code/author elsewhere.
- Der_Einzige 6y ago"Ohhh yeahhhhhh" Help me, this game makes me feel weird inside.
- orliesaurus 6y agoI love it - can you add rotation so you can scramble the pieces when you start to make it more challenging?
- deleted 6y ago[deleted]
- gpderetta 6y agoreminds me of the minigame in "The Talos Principle", but there a significant source of complexity comes from the ability to rotate the pieces.
- rjyoungling 6y agoLove the headline
- tosser0001 6y agoI opened this in Firefox and Chrome on a desktop and nothing happened other than some blocks floating by. No keyboard or mouse activity had any effect. It was only when I tried it on my phone did I see it was a game
- maximp 6y agoThis was really fun, and I loved the soundtrack. The suggestive "oh yea" message got old quickly though.
- egypturnash 6y agoReally I feel like half the challenge is that the whole thing is constrained to a tiny phone screen sized area and you can barely see what your pieces even are until you've thrown them onto the grid.
- johnmaguire2013 6y agoThe game is quite pretty, and fun for a minute, but it didn't seem to actually get more challenging as I played, and it got old quickly. And yes, the "oh yeah" is super weird.
- time0ut 6y agoYa, I lost interest a few levels in when the difficulty didn't really ramp up. Maybe it does later?
- 6510 6y agotakes a good bit but yeahh.
- johnmaguire2013 6y agoI dunno... I finally got a difficult one, then another easy-medium one, and then I got a really easy one thrown at me again so I closed the window.
- elonmusk61 6y agoAddictive!
- hwayne 6y agoAbout three months ago someone posted a netflify app called "Treksit", which was flagged for plagiarization: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24050651 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24050651 Both "Treksit" and "Blocks" use the same ambient music and have the same attribution in the credits: > Huge thanks to Mary Lou (Manoela Ilic) from Codrops for the constant inspiration. These are almost certainly by the same person, under two different accounts. That doesn't automatically mean this was also plagiarized, but it's extremely suspicious.
- whoisjuan 6y agoThat "ohh yeah" made me so uncomfortable.
- samorozco 6y agoThat game is amazing.
- kkdaemas 6y agoNot a very original concept. They use these puzzles for child intelligence tests. Are the puzzles automatically generated? What would be hilarious (imo) would be if the 100th puzzle is actually unsolvable.
- cjfd 6y agothanks for posting! it is a lot of fun.
- mrlala 6y agoThe "oh yeah" is creepy as hell, disable it!
