As a problem solver, I'd like to think that I'm always subconsciously working on unsolved problems at the back of my mind. Taking my mind off a problem for a bit might help me get a fresh perspective on things, and lead me to eventually solving it faster. Mental energy distractions like board games and TV might help in similar ways.
