It Will Be Awesome if They Don’t Screw it Up: 3D Printing
- robobenjie 15y agoI'm not sold on the 3D printer revolution. See: http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/215-Desktop-3D-printing-The-milk-analogy.html http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/215-Desktop-3D-printi...
- Kallikrates 15y agoExtrusion is easy but it's old, the new bleeding edge is http://3dhomemade.blogspot.com/ http://3dhomemade.blogspot.com/ (UV cured liquid resin)
- colanderman 15y agoThat looks fantastic, but I can't seem to find any info about how his printer works on that blog. Google turns up this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereolithography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereolithography but I'd like to know specifics about how he made it himself.

- colanderman 15y agoAha, DLP projection... ingenious! Thanks for the link.
- colanderman 15y agoEh, I don't buy that argument. I think there would be a market for "mini-cows"; the customers would be the same people who have indoor herb gardens or backyard vegetable gardens. Fortunately for the author, his analogy does not hold up anyway – milk is in high demand by home consumers; custom-made plastic widgets are not. (I'm racking my brain for "small things in a home made only out of plastic" and all I can come up with are disposable utensils, combs, and guitar picks.)
- EliRivers 15y agoIf you build it, they will come. From recent days, give people a 1Gbps connection, with a decent upstream, and they'll use it despite what the market research claimed in advance (go go, Kansas). Time and time again, when you give people a useful tool they can adapt to their own needs, they will find ways to use it. Give people the ability to define an object they want built out of plastic, and they will use it. Oh, how they'll use this. The ability to make any shape object out of plastic in your own home? The uses people find for this are going to be endless.

- noonespecial 15y agoI got my padd, my communicator, even my tri-corder. They damn well better not deprive me of my replicator over some lawyer crap. I've been waiting since I was 8.
