Even in the U.S. truck drivers are not that expensive.
- ranieuwe 6y agoDrivers can’t drive 24/7. This cuts down on time to destination significantly if the truck can keep going. Perhaps this can augment the driver, where driver provides handling, gas, etc. while the truck self drives.
- tommoor 6y agoI'm sure a driver will still be needed for a while yet, they'll just be required to do less – much like an airplane. So the whole system becomes safer. Around 5000 people die per year in crashes involving trucks in the US alone.
- jjeaff 6y agoThat's not a crazy high number. But I would assume there is an order of magnitude more of that in injuries. And then probably much more in property damage. So significantly reducing truck accidents could be very lucrative.
- ceejayoz 6y agoTrucks stop frequently at gas stations, rest areas, etc. without "truck pirates" making much of a dent. I'm not sure why it'd be any different in transit.
- x86_64Ubuntu 6y agoDrivers are in short supply depending on your location, and they are quite expensive. The pay along with the short supply has made keeping drivers a bit difficult in some places. Not to mention, a computer isn't going to be limited by OTR regulations concerning On-Duty and and Driving hours, and they don't have to reset.
- malandrew 6y agoApproximately what percent of the cost of shipping is the driver's salary? i.e. if you removed drivers entirely, how much can we expect prices to drop?
- ceejayoz 6y agoThat'll depend on the cargo. Corn costs like $150/ton. iPhones... do not. https://www.trucks.com/2018/05/22/shippers-truckers-soaring-fuel-labor-costs/ https://www.trucks.com/2018/05/22/shippers-truckers-soaring-... > Driver compensation accounted for 33 percent of motor carrier expenses, according to 2016 data collected by the American Transportation Research Institute, or ATRI.
- zhobbs 6y agoMaybe a driver would still be in the truck for non-highway situations, but could be sleeping in the cab so the vehicle utilization time is higher and goods delivered quicker on long hauls.
- josefresco 6y agoAccording to the following article/infographic, driver salary is the second largest cost in commercial trucking: https://www.thetruckersreport.com/infographics/cost-of-trucking/ https://www.thetruckersreport.com/infographics/cost-of-truck...
