I just set up a raspberry pi with ZeroTier. So far it seems like a really easy way to make the pi accessible whatever network it is in, and took minimal configuration to have it forward requests to any of the other devices on the internal network. The only drawback is I don't think it would be possible to connect to a peer from something like heroku where you don't have full control over the server..
