I think most of this has to do with intel getting out of a low margin business. They really are only interested I. Products with high margins, and if they don’t see a component with the desired margin they get out.
For the change in the IDM model, it will be interesting. Part of the way intel has seen high margins is by having the best yields and processes. Outsourcing fabs may reduce their ability to execute, or allow them to take advantage of new expertise from folk making much larger quantities in the arm marketplace. I really only see them doing it if they can preserve or increase their margin.
- mark-r 6y agoPart of the way? I'd say that Intel's success has been entirely due to their ability to stay a step ahead of everybody in fab processes. Losing that ability is going to kill their profitability in the long run. Things are going to get ugly for them. Losing a product line that drove that fab improvement process isn't going to help.
