Suicide Accounts for Most Gun Deaths. A Libertarian Approach Could Help
- ddingus 6y agoWhat other rights could be opted out of? Free speech? Just pointing out this is not how it works. Looking at the root causes of suicide, and economics as well as various forms of discrimination rank way up there, will help far more than establish a predicent for conditional inalienable rights would. I am open to reducing gun numbers. Non issue for me. Continuing to avoid addressing serious, growing economic and discrimination problems is something I am not open to.

- zepto 6y agoI can’t read the piece because of the paywall, but this is one of the strongest arguments against universal background checks. They make it either illegal or costly and impractical for someone who worries they might become suicidal to hand their guns to a trusted friend or relative for safekeeping. This is not an academic point - I have had a friend who was worried about needing to do this, and I have heard of veterans who have asked their friends to take their guns temporarily.
