As someone who has worked closely with a man who was born, raised, and educated in China, I can attest to the brutality of the regime. He simply would not say anything negative about CCP. The fear was more real than simple anxiousness. I sensed that he believed there could be real consequences for crossing the government, even in private in a conversation with someone in the US.
