This is precisely the reason why I don't encrypt full drives. A bad sector, which let's be honest, will happen eventually is a death sentence. I'm paranoid about security but not paranoid enough to take a chance like that. I've never heard of EncFS but I'll take a look. The gold standard for me is being able to easily recover my data from a corrupted and encrypted drive.
