Utubster downloads YTB playlists, MP4 videos and MP3s from almost any website
- raspyberr 6y agoIs this open source? Is this just a youtube-dl wrapper? Is this post just an advertisement? "Utubster video downloader supports downloading and converting to MP4 video and MP3 audio from all the known online video services including..." I doubt it.
- rozab 6y agoLooks like it's just meant to highlight the futile nature of attempting to take down tools like youtube-dl. Although that doesn't quite work, since it almost certainly uses youtube-dl under the hood

- jwilk 6y agoYeah, this smells very much like youtube-dl: $ strings -e l Utubster.exe | grep best bestaudio/best bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best bestvideo[ext=mp4][height<=1080]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[height<=1080] bestvideo[ext=mp4][height<=480]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[height<=480] bestvideo+bestaudio/best
- JdeBP 6y agoIt's unlikely to be a youtube-dl wrapper. A quick search of GitHub reveals a wide range of YouTube downloaders, written in languages from C# to Java and wholly independent of youtube-dl. * https://github.com/dqn/youtubedl https://github.com/dqn/youtubedl That said, many of them are clearly hobby projects, badly documented in the main and not at all polished. Whereas this is apparently a commercial closed-source tool with no visible means of income. The fact that Utubster's screenshots show an unadvertised "system repair" program forming part of the supposed video downloader does not inspire confidence.
- morceauxdebois 6y agoYou have to appreciate all the mp3download sites for taking the heat from youtube-dl (at least until recently it seems)
- sloshnmosh 6y agoI’ve been able to download videos and music files by finding the full direct links to the source by using my web browsers developer tools. Does this no longer work on YouTube?

- dxxvi 6y agoIt's not that simple for me. If you can show us how to do that (suppose that your audience knows how to use your web browser developer tools, ffmpeg, curl, ...) for a few websites like youtube, udemy, nbcnews.com, ... that will be grateful.
- lini 6y agoMany streaming services will split the media file into segments and send only the first few chunks to the browser, to limit bandwidth usage on longer media and block techniques like the one you described. Recently I used youtube-dl to get a zoom recording from Vimeo and remember that it was split in ~35 parts.
- arsome 6y agoWhat's the relevance to HN here? Yes, youtube-dl got whacked from github, but I doubt the youtube-dl users - especially on this site - want to replace it with a closed source, Windows-only, proprietary GUI tool with no reputation at all.
