I second Linode.com It's the first real VPS I've used and it's been pretty straight forward to learn. We're using it to host http://rumplo.com http://rumplo.com

I second this. Furthermore, it's cheap enough that there's no reason not to have dedicated instances for your DB server and your HTTP server.
