If you're looking for a low-cost alternative to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign, take a look at the Affinity suite of apps. Although they don't match Adobe apps feature-by-feature, they are professional grade apps with a lot of features. They are cross-platform (Mac and Windows) and they even have iPad versions of the Designer and Photo apps. The Affinity apps are not based on an online subscription model.
The Affinity Spotlight website showcases what people are using the apps for and the type of content they are creating:

I have all the Affinity apps and don't miss Adobe one bit, but the Affinity apps are a bit clunkly in their UI (but far less clunky than Adobe's apps).
After Effects (AE) is the only Adobe app that has no real rival. A new motion and animation app called Cavalry recently launched but it's far too early to see if it can rival AE. It also uses an online subscription model (https://cavalry.scenegroup.co/ https://cavalry.scenegroup.co/).
