Minecraft will require a Microsoft account to play in 2021
- mcv 6y agoThis could be really good or really terrible. My son is a big fan of the Java Edition, because it has the most options and allows the most modding. But some of his friends have the Bedrock edition. If this change means that you can use the same account for the Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition, that would be great. The Bedrockers could move to the Java Edition with the same account, or Java Edition players could switch to Bedrock for the occasional game with Bedrock players without losing their access to the Java Edition. If that's the case, then this is awesome. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of Microsoft Accounts in general. Microsoft pushes them too hard on Windows 10 users, and for the most part, they're pretty bad. Overly complicated, mostly, and 9 times out of 10 it's not what you want. I even made the stupid mistake to use Microsoft Family accounts to keep an eye on my son's gaming habit. Microsoft Family is probably the worst thing Microsoft has ever created. It's overly complicated, the UI is awful, it simply doesn't work, while pretending to work, and at some point my son's account got locked with no hint of how to fix it, except create a local account for him. All of that has nothing to do with Minecraft, but it explains why I'm wary of Microsoft accounts.

MS already owns Mojang so already there's nothing stopping them theoretically to make the two versions compatible. Requiring users to have a MS account won't change that.
- codeyperson 6y agoI think mcv may have meant that the single Microsoft account could give access to both versions. Currently I believe if you have Mojang account for the Java version, you cannot use that account to access the Bedrock version.
- cesarb 6y agoAlso, Minecraft is expensive (at the current price and exchange rates, it's 15% of the minimum wage here), and currently you have to buy the Java and Bedrock editions separately. If this change means that you can use the same account for the Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition, that means you're getting the other edition for free. What worries me is if this change is a prelude to adding some sort of copy protection to the Java edition (beyond requiring a valid account login before downloading the game or connecting to a server).
- mcv 6y agoThey don't have to be compatible, but if they both require the same account, I hope that means a single account will be valid for both. Someone with Java Edition would also be able to play Bedrock Edition.
- nolroz 6y agoGoogle family link is even worse. I haven't found a decent app for monitoring/regulating my kids use of tech in a sane way at all.
