CD/radio alarm clocks were very prevalent not so long ago. A handful of CDs that meet your taste and one of those (presumably obtainable for peanuts on ebay) might do. If that's too much clutter - did you google around for pre-existing pi projects so you don't need to waste any time on it? And if it doesn't exist - sounds like an approachable project for someone in the HN crowd to pick up!
