Tesla FSD price will go up by $2k starting next week, says Elon Musk
- mft_ 6y agoIt's worth noting that this is related to the release (yesterday) of their total re-write of the FSD software. It's only being released very slowly at the moment, but some examples are already trickling out... and it's pretty different. For example, this video shows the new visualisation approach as the car drives along a city street and autonomously navigates a left-hand turn, having waited for an oncoming car to drive past: https://twitter.com/brandonee916/status/1319126180675481600?s=21 https://twitter.com/brandonee916/status/1319126180675481600?... There's a compendium of news on the new FSD here: https://old.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/jftx5l/all_fsd_footage/ https://old.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/jftx5l/all_fsd...
- mtgx 6y agoGood stuff, but let's not forget that these are cherrypicked examples, and even if Tesla can show 10,000 of these examples, there could be 1 million other examples/scenarios at which they didn't think about and the software isn't optimized for them. It's going to take a lot of trial and error (and a lot of time) to iron out all the kinks. I still believe that in the meantime, it's irresponsible of Musk/Tesla to market this as a "full self-driving" system or anything of the sort. There is no doubt in mind my that people will continue to die by allowing this system to "fully self-drive them home", and also that Tesla will continue to get legal cover for it, because the lawyers ensured to use all the necessary footnotes in the multi-page ToS that nobody ever reads. For instance, they'll be adding things like: You can enable self-driving mode, but: - you can never take your hands off the wheel - you can never close your eyes - you can never look at your phone - etc, etc Those footnotes will by default imply that the system isn't really fully self-driving, so marketing it as such should be illegal as false advertising, especially since it puts people's lives in danger. Humans are not robots, so why expect them to act like robots? You give humans a 99% self-driving system, they are going to die, because they won't be able to "look out for that 1% scenario in which they can have an accident". It's crazy to think that it would work like that.
- vaccinator 6y agoRaise the price when its not even ready... do they do that to get attention? Because of the other companies like Waymo and Cruise getting so much publicity?
- jfengel 6y agoThe whole point is that you get a discount for being willing to get the hardware before the software is ready. As the software gets closer to ready, the price goes up.
- vaccinator 6y agoThe way I read it, it's about as ready as it was a year ago, or more...
