There's an uninformed idea domestically and abroad that Zero Cases In New Zealand is normal, and anything else should be a headline. Zero cases in the country will never be realistic while we have people flying in, goods arriving on airplanes and ships.
We've learned not to freak out about cases that are in managed isolation, where new arrivals into the country are housed for 14 days until any Covid infections reveals itself.
We're slowly learning that we need to be always checking in to businesses so that contract tracing is easy for the inevitable infections that slip through port workers or are late-blooming after quarantine ends. Both these cases have already happened: the headline here refers to a close contact of a port worker, and we had someone come down with Covid after leaving managed isolation. (Miraculously, no wider community infection from the latter)
- just-juan-post 6y agoWe need to inform the PM and people of NZ who, for the last few weeks, have been bombarding the news cycle of their "success in beating" Covid (for a second time). Anyone who mentioned that there would be a 3rd and a 4th time were derided. I agree. The people of NZ need to realize that non-zero cases is normal and that there's no "beating" Covid no matter how much the PM and the news cycle proclaim it. Preach.
