This is the actual title of the article. A quote
“But the pandemic has revealed that university life is far more embedded in the American idea than anyone thought. America is deeply committed to the dream of attending college.”
This is a little like claiming your car wants to drive itself after jumping out of said moving car on a flat stretch of downhill road. Look, nobody’s there and it’s still moving!
There is four years of inertia built into the system. Call back in four years and we can talk about the “necessity” of the college experience. It will certainly be there in some (hopefully improved) form for many young people in certain social classes. What that form will ultimately be...too early to tell.
As to the Author’s thesis that “college’s secondary purpose, [is] education,...its primary one, collegiate life”
...if you want to keep a large physical plant financially viable, you better hope that’s right. Education should be able to be done much more cheaply, quickly and with better quality for motivated students via IT that’s been around for 5 years or more. Speaking from experience, for the lower classes, immigrants...education is by far the primary goal. The thesis seems a bit classist to me, but it is from the Atlantic.
