I switched back to linux two years ago for exactly the same reason. It was painful at first, but it's worth it. The only things I still miss are the visual feedback in the UI (lots of little stuff) and the feel of the trackpad. But the customizability has more than made up for that in productivity. Like being able to edit the source code for the window manager.
