AOC’s debut Twitch stream is one of the biggest ever
- rektide 6y agoGood. This is a great public figure of our time, & they are demonstrating to the world a means to communicate & reach out & connect with people, that other people can themselves adapt & learn from & do themselves. This is neat. This is one example. I hope we see more & varied forms of socialization via sharing happen. Sure there will be downsides, dangers, but I for one believe a lot of good can emerge here, & that passion & interests to explore mediums & their use is worthwhile.
- op03 6y agoThis is why Kim Kardashian will be president.
- devmunchies 6y agoOr we can just put the computers in the trash and we’d socialize because it’s natural. I get that it’s the only viable option for many, but a digital medium feels like fast food to me. I never feel as good but get powerful chemical feedback. I just went to the lake with friends and it was much better. Hope things start trending the other way.
- rektide 6y agoAs a kid, sometimes it feels like there is not a lot you can do. Maybe you can't go get elected & run or office right now. Maybe you do have friends you can go hang out with, but they're all probably like you... powerless kids also looking for something to do. Part of what is neat about computers, neat about streaming, is that the computer doesn't care. You can stream. You can make movies. You can create, be creative, you can share. You can learn better about yourself & what you can do. You can learn what isn't working, what isn't good. And you can decide which of those things you want to fix, adjust, change, & make better. Computers, general purpose computers, will let you refine & iterate & alter & change, as far down the rabbit hole as you dare to go. It's a bit of a far cry to streaming, ok maybe, to playing games online on camera, but it's in the same world of creativity, of creating. It starts the same way. It lets you develop yourself in similar ways. Limited only by how far & weird you are willing & able to take it, by your willingness to explore where you might go.
- thatswrong0 6y agoI know it's silly, and this sort of positive spin is definitely the point of her doing this, but I agree. I am starting to think more and more that it's important for our politicians to be "with it" and at least try to understand modern society, culture, and technology. Why is that? The median age in the U.S. is 37.9. The average age of a congressional representative, however, is ~58, and senator ~62. There are dinosaurs like Dianne Feinstein in the Senate, who is 87. She is certainly not "with it", and happens to support insane legislation such as that which would make strong encryption illegal. I don't feel represented at all by the likes of her, or Nancy Pelosi, or pretty much any of the other politicians out there. I don't trust them to make good decisions for my future - rather, I expect them only to use the political machine they have at their backs to advance their own selfish goals. It really does feel like a gerontocracy. The internet now makes it possible for an entire congressional district's worth of people to interact with their representative in this novel, light hearted, and humanizing manner. By demonstrating that she is capable of understanding and using modern technology in this way, it makes me a tiny bit more confident that someone like AOC _might_ legislate the internet in an effective manner.
- op03 6y agoOnce people start saying Likes/Clicks/Views lead to Outcomes not just for person hitting the numbers, but for the whole of society then they need to point at those Outcomes. Not the Like/Click/View counts. Obama did the connect thing. He was certified "with it". He was called the first Social Media President for taking advantage of it in ways the "dinosaurs" didn't. He collected record number of Likes. But what was the point of all that? Did the Likes/Clicks/Views translate to outcomes? Those that didn't think he was "with it" just went and looked for some one else. And propped them up with the same tools. Trump gets record Likes. Trump gets power. But where are the outcomes? Both sides think they are brilliant for hitting new social media records. And then get trapped into an arms race of Like counting. Not outcome counting. Both sides have proved Likes do not equal Outcomes for Society. But they sure do reward the Individual and some small coterie around the Individual. The reward system has to change. Count Outcomes to Society. Not outcomes of the person.
- troughway 6y agoAOC = Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
- dane-pgp 6y ago> And she’s genuinely pretty good at Among Us Do we really want to set the precedent of rewarding politicians for their ability to kill people and successfully lie about it? I mean, isn't that the problem this election is trying to fix?
- rektide 6y agoUpvoting, because the other two replies be stressing about your serious/not-serious play. Don't discard this kind of toying with the topics!
- dane-pgp 6y agoThank you for appreciating the subtle humorousness that I intended in my comment. I'm sorry that you seem to have been penalized for taking that stand.
- gigatexal 6y agoIt’s a game chill
