We shouldn't ask why engineering hiring is broken. We should ask how an industry with broken hiring can succeed. Software engineering has such ludicrous margins that the labor market for software engineers can be ludicrous in equal proportion. The result is that we can bully and cajole smart, capable people, then go on to make 6 figure salaries and makes billions of dollars in revenue.
