So who's going to pay for browser development, then?
Google bankrolled both Chrome and Firefox.
- toyg 6y agoSlowing down development of the browser will actually turn out to be a Good Thing. The breakneck speed that has seen Google pushing more and more features has effectively destroyed the ecosystem of alternatives, since nobody could keep up. And after all this, is the web so massively better than it was in 2005? Not really. We just download more and more bloated polyfill libraries. KHTML was the basis for the original webkit, and that was built basically for free.

- toyg 6y agoNot “massively” better. Plus, you are paying for those videogames with your behavioral data and your non-tech relatives getting radicalised by algos.
- shadowgovt 6y agoIf you've heard news of archive.org radicalizing my non-tech relatives, let me know.
- toyg 6y agoThe mainstream doesn’t even know archive.org exists. But they are all on youtube, and Google will make sure they keep doing that, “optimizing the experience” of the browser to lead them there.
