How many African American GitHub users care about master vs. main?
- JMTQp8lwXL 6y agoInstead of spending so much time and effort proving someone else's idea isn't a productive use of time, why not spend your limited time and effort investing in ways you feel produces meaningful, positive change for racial equality and justice? Who cares if other people are making what you feel are symbolic gestures. You could spend 10 hours convincing me renaming branches furthers nothing, or you could spend 10 hours fixing the problem (or working towards fixing the problem).
- sirnicolaz 6y agoIt's good to know what matters and what not. If you need to fix a problem, it is good to distinguish between a proper solution and something that consumes people time without having absolutely no (or even negative) impact.
- JMTQp8lwXL 6y agoHow would you go about measuring differences in racial attitudes as a result of defaulting branch names to 'main' from 'master'? I think the data empirically shows a majority don't agree with the change, but it doesn't prove its efficacy, which is the best measure of 'if it matters'. In other words, just because 70% of people believe it is an ineffective change, doesn't make it actually ineffective.

Producing something, anything, especially a business is more rewarding than this SJW navel gazing. Would have preferred if the article framed the question as such. How many African-American github users would prefer creating a passive revenue stream over having vain individuals invade the tech space with their self-indulgent virtue signalling via misplaced guilt?
