Ask HN: Best site hosting and email solution?
I have been using hostmonster since early 2000s. Back then it was family owned business. It has since sold to a larger firm.
I use to get unlimited domains and email for a few dollars a month. Now I am up to $18 a month for the same services.
What is your solution to unlimited domains and email for those domains? I am curios if there are lower cost options that just work with little maintenance.
- aronpye 6y agoI use Fastmail and have been happy with them. If you’re super privacy conscious then there is protonmail as well. I think most services charge per user though, although with Fastmail you can setup aliases across multiple domains.
- justusthane 6y agoI use Fastmail and it's fantastic. Unlimited domains and aliases. However, it only provides a single user per subscription. In other words, it's great if you're the only one using it and you're in control of all the other domains. If you're setting a client up with email at their own domain, it will cost an additional $40ish/year for their Fastmail user account. I would love to find a good email provider that provides unlimited domains and users, and limits only storage capacity.
- saradhi 6y agoNever tried Fastmail. But it seems Zoho email is comparatively cheaper at 12$/year. Been using Zoho since 2014 for my side gigs - pretty satisfactory.
- justusthane 6y agoI really like Cloudways, but it's not going to be a price cut from where you're currently at. It starts at about $23/mo. It's sort of a managed VPS service. It provides the power and flexibility of a VPS (like DigitalOcean, etc) with the ease-of-management of a traditional shared host.
- ianmf 6y agoI have my domains via Google Domains, web hosting on Digital Ocean, and email I have a free grand-fathered GSuite. I would switch my email to a different provider but you can't beat GSuite for free (at least for now).
- dsukhin 6y agoReally any cheap VPS provider with cPanel should do what you are asking to provide unlimthed domains, aliases, users, mailboxes, catch alls, forwarding, etc. if you are not looking for anything more complex than IMAP support. Just be sure to set all your DNS/DKIM/SPF up correctly and you should be good to go.
- yumraj 6y agoZoho works well for me, pretty cheap and full featured. I think it’s $2-$3 per month for unlimited domains.
- tmaly 6y agoZoho might be what I need looking at it, the price for premium looks to be $4 a month.
- muzani 6y agoNetlify is one of the easiest for basic hosting, and free* for individuals. I don't think they do emails. At a budget of $18/month, you could probably register Gmail or do a dirt cheap (but ugly) one with Namecheap for a few cents a month.
- pryelluw 6y agoI use opalstack. Its from the old webfaction team. Great service at a good price.
- sharmi 6y agoAlso consider migadu.com Happy customer for two years. Unlimited domains and email ids. There is a limit on number of emails for the basic plan though.
