Statement 2 regards understanding the root cause of this particular incident and reactively fixing it so it won’t happen again. Acknowledging statement 1 doesn’t mean giving up—it simply means being clear and realistic about the nature and scale of the problem we’re facing when we try to build complex software systems. In the face of that we can give up, or we can just do the best we can, and it sounds more like these people are doing the latter.
