This is dumb. In the best case you might get away with a few new cars for 2 weeks at a time, after lengthy battles with dealerships and legal departments. In the worst or most likely case you’ll be stuck with an expensive car, or have to pay the depreciation of a two week old car (massive) as the “wear and tear” part, on top of a bunch of legal fees after you inevitably fight it
- Larrikin 6y agoAlso in practice most people don't try to scam when there is any kind of barrier to prevent doing it long term and at scale. You could probably get many bags of chip every year if you wanted to using their freshness guarantee, but you have to call them and explain the issue to a person. This alone is enough, I can't imagine anyone would fill out the paper work for loans and getting a car multiple times a month
- cyphar 6y agoThere's even an xkcd comic about this <https://xkcd.com/1499/ https://xkcd.com/1499/>.
- WalterBright 6y agoA dealership once tried to sell me as "new" a car that had 2000 miles on the odometer.
- jacquesm 6y agoTypically they can be reset a couple of times so that test drives don't show up when a customer buys a 'new' car. Once it goes over a certain mileage that stops and the car has to be sold as a demo or used car.
- willcipriano 6y agoI believe that is illegal in the US. "A person may not advertise for sale, sell, use, install, or have installed, a device that makes an odometer of a motor vehicle register a mileage different from the mileage the vehicle was driven, as registered by the odometer within the designed tolerance of the manufacturer of the odometer"[0] [0]https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/32703 https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/32703
