Google is beginning the forced migration from Hangouts to Chat next year
- joombaga 6y ago> But if they want to use Google’s “custom Messages features” for Google Fi, they’ll have to disable RCS. What does this mean? I'm a Google Fi subscriber that currently uses Hangouts for SMS. What features am I going to miss if I don't disable RCS?
- PopeDotNinja 6y agoIf you didn’t know, you can use Google Voice with Google Fi now. That’s what I’ve been using .
- netsharc 6y agoHangouts still works with XMPP, and one could use OTR ( https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/ https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/ ) on top of it. I wonder if Chat also supports XMPP...
- bendauphinee 6y agoIt does not. Have to use chat for work, and it most definitely does not support anything outside of a browser.
- crmrc114 6y agoGtalk, Hangouts, Messages, Allo, Duo.. I may be missing some. Does Google actually have a long term plan for messaging this time? I tire of forced migrations when you could just iteratively update your messaging solution. My only guess is that various teams are internally competing with no core customer focus. Is all of this because of the nebulous management structure at Google?
