Isn’t Stallman’s reply just an ad hominem? I presume “what I stand for” in Stallman’s response refers to the concept of all software being free. But even if Alexey disagrees with that premise, it’s still possible for his advice to be sound. It certainly didn’t look like Alexey was trying to sabotage the free software movement by giving bad advice – many people in the HN discussion of the open letter agreed with the advice.
