Follow the First Amendment.
- kodablah 6y agoBut the first amendment prevents the government from telling me or my company that I have to follow the first amendment like they do.
- roywiggins 6y agoPrecisely. Enforcing "neutrality" on private parties would be unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.
- eli 6y agoThe First Amendment is in conflict with the government regulating what viewpoints companies allow on their platforms.
- joshuaheard 6y agoSection 230 does that now. It gives platforms publisher immunity. They could change the law to require platforms to follow the first amendment in order to retain their publisher immunity.
- shadowgovt 6y agoThey could. "Should they" is a very reasonable question. I, for one, appreciate the current status quo where I generally don't have to deal with neo-Nazis spouting nonsense uncontested on my Facebook wall (and if that arrangement bothers me, I could go to some other site).
- joshuaheard 6y agoYou can block that or contest it, as you wish. I've been called a Nazi for opposing critical race theory. Where do you draw the line? Social media companies lean left, the government should ensure they remain neutral by following the First Amendment.
- shadowgovt 6y ago> You can block that or contest it, as you wish. I'm happy to do so. I'm also happy the platform has some base-level standards so I don't have to block and contest quite so much. > Social media companies lean left, the government should ensure they remain neutral by following the First Amendment. Is there anything in particular about social media, as a technology, that causes all companies engaging in it to "lean left?" If not, this is a problem the market can solve.
