I think you have to put more responsibility on Facebook here. It's very much a centralized network. It's just that the people behind the network don't want the duty of being good stewards of it. Based on their actions and inaction, their values don't seem to go much further than "ad money printer goes brrrr." They want the money and influence that comes with scale but none of the responsibility for it.
