The Latest on Google Hangouts and the Upgrade to Google Chat

Given that Google Fi support is being moved from Hangouts to Messages by Google, and Messages doesn't exist for iOS... Does this mean that Google Fi for iPhones is officially discontinued? Or did Google just forget about that use case?

Wasn't the point of the Fi/Hangouts integration to allow making and receiving calls and texts even in situations when the phone/SIM isn't online for some reason, just like Google Voice? It seems like the Google Voice app would be a natural fit for this functionality, but for whatever reason, Google seems to want to keep them as separate products.
