When I was looking for a new SWE job in 2016 after my startup laid off a third of its employees the vast majority of open positions in other startups were in "analytics", marketing or advertising-related companies. And similarly most of the positions that Amazon, Facebook and Google recruiters have approached me for are also in that field (even though I don't have any professional experience in that area, nor any keywords in my LinkedIn profile). I understand it's where the money is, and it's probably a good idea to work in a profit-center for once instead of being viewed as a cost-center by the MBAs, but I still have a soul.
