I am sure I have done similar in one of the Linux file managers. Maybe Nautilus? Probably many. Never tried in Mac/Finder

  Finder has a "Connect to Server" option in the menu. Or you can type an ftp:// URL in Safari and it opens there.

    It does, but it’s read only.

    The same options are on Nautilus and forks (Caja, Nemo). FTWAI the GVfs API is utilized and resources are accessed via a URI but are also mounted on $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/gvfs; usually /run/user/$USERID/gvfs.
