Cory Doctorow on the danger of cynical science fiction
- seg_lol 6y agoI remember Neal Stephenson asking for the same thing at Town Hall in Seattle a number of years ago. The lament was that cynicism drives cynicism and we need to give hope to people solving problems. I could only get 50 pages into Handmaid's Tale for the same reason. My corpus-cynacismus is already too active.
- whythre 6y agoThe latest Star Trek offerings have struck me as viciously cynical. The future was meant to be a place where humanity strove to be its best. Instead of looking forward we have stories that, while not hopeless, certainly reek of pessimism. Apparently the only story we want to tell is about the End of the Cruel American Empire, rather than how our own present could transform into something greater.
