My 'side project' turned into a full-time business for 5+ years and it was making a million dollars in sales/year at one point in time. It really depends on your goals. My goal has always been to have my own business, so I put lots of time and energy into side projects. If I only wanted to have a career, I probably would use that time and energy on something more career-oriented.
