I guess what most comments here are missing is the analysis behind certain purchases that come almost as a default in certain people's life like a bigger home, better car, etc. Not everything has to be cost-optimized some things can be just for pleasure or for the peace of having something available when needed. What I do think is that for a lot of people many of these purchases are just a default path to follow.
