You're right, you don't need "linux for dummies" (don't even understand the point of linking to that), you're probably better off sticking with windows. For what it's worth, though, I haven't been "my own sysadmin" nor have I had to "spend time dealing with all the configuration idiosyncrasies and driver issues on a day-to-day basis" in linux for the past six years. In fact, I don't even install extensions anymore. My secret ain't manuals, though, it's the much simpler "only buy machines that the vendors declare as compatible with linux" or the even simpler "buy machines with linux installed already". Though I only use my computer for browsers, editors, IDEs, terminal windows, and productivity apps; and pretty much nothing else, so experience may vary of course.
