The 1619 Chronicles
- throwawaysea 6y ago> Those concerns came to light last month when a longstanding critic of the project, Phillip W. Magness, noted in the online magazine Quillette that references to 1619 as the country’s “true founding” or “moment [America] began” had disappeared from the digital display copy without explanation. This perhaps is the biggest indictment of the 1619 project, that the most central and controversial claims were quietly scrubbed, without actually acknowledging these flaws or the project's critics openly. At the same time, all the rest of the content in the project that stemmed from that worldview remains in tact. It is scary to see activists and teachers unions pushing for this content to be taught in schools, given its poor scholarship and purposeful ignorance of fact checkers (https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/03/06/1619-project-new-york-times-mistake-122248 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/03/06/1619-proje...).
- psmithsfhn 6y agoI have not seen a single serious critique of the 1619 project yet. So far it's all just hyperbolic white supremacist right-wing fox news-speak. I do understand the seriousness of the situation though -- the 1619 project is an absolutely devastating portrait of america and its white supremacy. It's a welcome corrective to the lies we still tell ourselves and teach to the children of america.
