I play a decent amount of BallisticNG, a high speed racing game. I'm not great at it, but when I upgraded from a 60HZ display to a 144Hz display, I suddenly started breaking all my previous track records by several seconds without trying. Lower latency absolutely gives a noticeable advantage in competitive games.
