  Because the transistor is cheaper.. But yes, I agree... all the fancy remote controlled light bulbs you can get today, still doesn't quite compare to the click of a physical switch and an immediate response :) Lived in the US a few years, but the feel and sound of switches in Denmark is somehow better :D

  It's almost a century old design; I've posted patent links in another top-level comment here. In this case there's no real improvement to be made in adding complexity in the form of electronics, especially in an application involving flammable liquids...
