From the essay:
> A group of 10 people within a large organization is a kind of fake tribe. The number of people you interact with is about right. But something is missing: individual initiative. Tribes of hunter-gatherers have much more freedom. The leaders have a little more power than other members of the tribe, but they don't generally tell them what to do and when the way a boss can.
- rightbyte 6y agoHow does he know how those prehistoric groups worked? The boss report relationship is more child parent like in a hunter gatherer context I guess. Obvously it just all guessing how stone age groups worked, but the biggest difference has to be that there were no formal enforced hierarchies. Maybe there was one elder and a shaman?
- leetcrew 6y agoit seems to make sense. if you're the leader of a ten person group and you push enough of them to their limit, it's not that hard for them to replace you. if you're the leader of a ten person group, but also have the support of a thousand person hierarchy, your followers can't easily get away with replacing you.
