If the cost is considered disproportionately high (I'm not entirely familiar, as I buy only budget or out-of-production ones), the implication is that one is buying a brand. Even not accounting the iPhone, I think mobile phones has been always (or at least, for a long time) considered part of one's status; that will never depreciate.
