Stop that apologist crap. I grew up in a rural area and I know these people quite well. People in rural areas reject science, general knowledge and social norms of the "big cities" because they are frightened and ignorant, not because of some equally valid world view.
Their response to climate science is stubborn ignorance. Their response to different cultures, races and religion is bigotry. Their response to democracy (when it doesn't suit them) is reactionary. Their response to education is closed mindedness. There's nothing to respect here.
Rural people are happy to have iPhones, as long as they don't need to understand the science behind the technology, understand the multicultural aspects of it's existence or respect the people who created it.
As Asimov said 40 years ago:
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
- konjin 6y agoSounds good. So tell me, factually, are blacks responsible for 52% of all violent crimes yet constitute 12% of the population? Gee wiz turns out science and facts get swept under the rug by liberals as well when they don't jive with their world view.
- russellbeattie 6y agoAhh! Conservative projection at its finest, combined with a little cherry picked racism as well. Great job! You represent your kind well. I'm not a Republican so I don't deny actual facts. Even if your numbers were up to date and accurate, which they aren't (get out of your bubble, Fox boy) the causes are tied to much more than race so it's a meaningless number designed only to incite racial hatred. Good job again! To repeat: Fear and ignorance. Which you just gave us a great example of. Also, to the other HNers. It's election season, so enjoy the "overly political" comments for a while.
- konjin 6y agoI'm a socialist.
- srtjstjsj 6y agoI'll spot you that it's a fact, ignoring the racism behind how "violent crime" is defined. Using that fact as an irrational basis for despicable racist behavior doesn't jive with my worldview.
- konjin 6y agoThe natural variability climate change defense playbook. Again going head to head with conservative reality denial there.

- shadowgovt 6y agoI, for one, wouldn't mind knowing that. Agriculture is an absolutely fascinating topic.
- russellbeattie 6y agoWell. If you have a handbook and an afternoon free, I'm sure you could figure it out. Just like designing an algorithm for efficient mobile phone battery utilization while handing off wireless connections in a moving car. They're totally equivalent. Really!
