He Painted It Black: Goya
- forinti 6y agoI can't recommend enough Carlos Saura's Goya en Burdeos. It is a wonderful film about this great painter.
- Daub 6y agoI am a Goya fanboy. He was miles ahead of his time in terms of self-determining his themes. He was also surprisingly thoughtful. His famous 3rd May painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_of_May_1808 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_of_May_1808 ...had a lesser known partner, the 2nd May: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_of_May_1808 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_of_May_1808 From the left leading down to the middle is a swath of men all caught in the act of killing each other. One 'frame' later they would all be dead. The figure of the man stabbing the horse is looking on in horror. This is the same figure being shot in the 3rd May painting. Hence the set becomes one morbid circle of death. The article mentions how Goya used staged accidents to come up with visual ideas. That is interesting news to me and I will add it to my list of artists who are known to have employed similar techniques (DaVinci, Max Ernst, Dali).
