  Fortunately, that was not the only option. Another one was give up and GTFO. Which I did. BTW, more than 50% of my classmates and ex-colleagues did that, and more than 50% of these who did are working in FAANG companies. Probably due to legal stuff, i.e. larger companies have better immigration lawyers.
