American Technology Is Used to Censor the Web from Algeria to Uzbekistan
- mc32 6y agoI get that there is a quantitative and maybe qualitative difference, but while we decry heavy handed censorship that happens in these autocratic nations, we’re mostly okay with the subversive soft censorship large social media corps conduct on their world audience when it involves a topic they don’t like or want to kerb. You may say yeah I have no problem with disinformation, right. But what about information that is counternarrative and gets deranked? Or the kind that is “unsafe” but true?
- 1cvmask 6y agoCensorship, downranking and deplatforming is already widely used by all social media platforms (and payment systems like Patreon) all over the world. A friend got banned multiple times from Facebook and Twitter for posting articles from Sweden about their handling of the coronavirus - apparently an incendiary topic. And now Swedish Spotify has employees who want to selectively muzzle Joe Rogans podcasts: https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2020/10/05/joe-rogan-spotify-comments/ https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2020/10/05/joe-rogan-spotif...
- mc32 6y agoYes this what I mean. To some people one form of censorship is okay when it confirms or conforms to their world view, but if it doesn’t then they are against it. Another political on is gofundme. If you are perceived to be tar feathered then they suspend the campaign. If you align with their views you are okay. It’s really bad that we’ve gotten into this and at least in the medium term all I see is the formation of camps. So two sides will deplatform each other side. That drives a terrible wedge between people.
