... the story says they forged FBI documents. Surely that's a crime?
- Lammy 6y agoIt seems like the only people who would need FBI documents would also know a fake wasn't theirs?
- meroes 6y agoFox ran and then retracted a story because the thought they were legit enough to publish a story based on them.
- Lammy 6y agoI'm not surprised given their general history of journalistic integrity, but I still don't think that justifies trying to identify and charge the person who made it.
- mmcwilliams 6y agoIsn’t this article about a civil suit? I don’t think anyone is at risk of being charged, here.
- nl 6y agoFox ran the story despite the journalists knowing it was likely a fake document. From messages quoted in the judge's order[1]: In the texts, Biggs stated “It’s a fake for sure.” Zimmerman responded “Do you know anything about him or where he really works or who he is? . . . [I’m] wondering why he passed a fake document when other info he’s shared has been spot on.” [1] https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/7223134-ORDER-RICH.html https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/7223134-ORDER-RICH.h...
- justaguy1 6y agoShe made those statements well after the story was run and the fakes had come to light.
- nl 6y agoThat's not obvious in the order. Do you have somewhere we can read that?
- justaguy1 6y agoI’m partly basing this on firsthand knowledge, since I was somewhat involved with it, but it’s in the order as well although it’s confusing. You’ll note that the first mention of Whyspertech emails ... dates several weeks after Fox published the initial article. Whyspertech wasn’t a source for the article. He was someone who was encouraging Fox to keep it up, and possibly go further in reporting. It wasn’t Fox just willy-nilly reporting what some Twitter account said… It was complicated with multiple people being deceitful, in a coordinated way.
- nl 6y agoI tried to find the messages since they seem to be in evidence in this case, but they don't seem to be uploaded to documentcloud (yet).
