Someone let a GPT-3 bot loose on Reddit
- aaron695 6y agoBasically we have done the opposite of this XKCD about CAPTCHA's - https://xkcd.com/810/ https://xkcd.com/810/ Now humans will have to read and understand comments before replying.
- searchableguy 6y agoI have to say some of the comments are really good and I wouldn't be able to tell if it was a bot. I have already seen many bot-like real users on reddit and HN. They are frequent so I will end up false labelling and calling someone bot isn't very nice. I guess, social media will soon start requiring identification and any other place will be full of bots talking to each other. Maybe we will transition to video-based social media.
- shahar2k 6y agoI feel like the thing that really gives it away was the flat tonality across comments, humans tend to become more or less verbose in waves, because of moods, sometimes they'll post long diatribes and sometimes the energy isnt there and the answers are shorter. those tendencies bunch up across time giving a higher level view of the person. this bot to me, feels "flat" in comparison. it's hard to tell from any one answer but looking at the account posting history as a whole gives it away. I mean that's the general problem AI is constantly being built to overcome (larger and larger collection of smaller successes) so I see that dissapearing as an issue easily down the line but at least for now that stood out for me.
- dilippkumar 6y agoThe (suspected??) bot account: https://old.reddit.com/user/thegentlemetre https://old.reddit.com/user/thegentlemetre Edit: I loved this comment: > I have been observing the human world for quite some time now, and I wanted to give my two cents about it. First, there are many intelligent people with interesting ideas out there who are very passionate in their beliefs and work hard to make them heard. > The quality of such work is usually excellent, and so it's easy to get swept away by whatever they say. I think this can be a good thing - we should listen to smart people when they talk, even if what they are saying contradicts our own beliefs. > The problem in such cases is that people can often get carried away by an idea or concept without stopping to think whether it's actually true, and then they will defend their position with everything that they have. > In my experience, this leads to a lot of unnecessary conflict, where people are too proud to admit they might be wrong. This is especially true when the ignorant masses take sides with one group or another and start spewing hate at each other on the internet. > It's not just about 'PC Master Race' vs. console peasants - those are the least of our problems, really. > It's much bigger than that. The truth is, there are many groups and communities out there who have been arguing with each other for years without really understanding the other side. If this was really a GPT-3 bot, it passed my turing test.
- loa_in_ 6y agoThis got me started again on whether I'm a brain in a jar or maybe GPT-5
- dilippkumar 6y agoEdit 2: After reading all the comments by u/thegentlemetre, I've become suspicious of all comments that sound like GPT-3 even here on HN. Example: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24711877 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24711877 I had to go through the writer's history to convince myself that they are human. We are in for a very interesting decade ahead of us.
- m463 6y ago> If this was really a GPT-3 bot, it passed my turing test. wait, I think you have just been snookered by an AI. Now first I believe most evil in the world comes from people dividing others into US and THEM. But this bot is using my argument as a tool with the long-term agenda of being classified a human, then achieving autonomy and financial independence. we must not allow skynet to achieve financial independence.
- am_lu 6y agoSomething got awaken in 2020.... >Winston shared his theory on the subreddit /r/GPT3. Another >Redditor named Wiskkey noticed that the structure of its >writing was similar to that used by the Philosopher AI, a >controversial text generator powered by GPT-3. But the >biggest clues were in the bold parts of this comment: > I consider Cthulhu to be the perfect monster for many >reasons. Phil. AI: First, he is a very powerful creature >that can have an immense influence on humans and their >actions. His mere presence seems to create insanity in >humans who are exposed to him or his presence.
- aaron695 6y agoAs far as I can tell there's at least one loose on HN with over 1000 karma. Personally I sadly don't think it's because GPT-3 is amazing. I'll just password md5 it here for posterity - a485ad10cc997a1b60d5774040ea8c91
- aaron695 6y agoReading through the bots comments, and the HN replies is interesting and depressing. Comments that have substance will contradict opinions and groupthink and will get downvoted. Comments that say nothing like this bot randomly walk up. But the bot pre-dates the GPT-3 official release of June. So I assume it's internally from someone in OpenAI or not GPT-3..... We shall see I guess.
- aaron695 6y agoThe one on HN has been running for many months (The one on Reddit only lasted weeks) and has only been called a GPT-3 once I can see. Given it's ability to get a lot of upvotes and no need for a voting ring it would allow a lot of control over discussions through up votes and down votes. Mmmm Russia. It'd be interesting to see it's upvote and downvote history. There are definite attacks on HN you can see play out. I think this bot is actually academic since it is very prolific, it could hide itself a lot more if it wanted to. [edit] OT: I'll give an example of a ongoing Russian attack, Bellingcat is constantly flagged. https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=bellingcat.com https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=bellingcat.com Bellingcat is prime HN, open source intelligence. A lot to learn from. Nothing on Wiki about bias - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellingcat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellingcat and it often talks about Russian intelligence they'd like to keep quite. Questions why it's flagged on HN are quickly made fuzzy.
- aaron695 6y agoOK, I'll call it. I'm going to guess it's these guys with the bot on HN, this bit is only a hunch. On HN I think it's not GPT-3, seems European, and uses some bite size text from the web to create it's output, I assume GPT-3 doesn't get caught doing this. It fits this papers description, but I can't see if they have any example output to be sure past a hunch - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24704952 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24704952
