5G is not being pushed for benefit of consumers. It's meant for IoT devices (toys, appliances, bikes, cars, toothbrushes, ...) What average joe will see from 5G are cheaper devices and more targeted advertising.

If 5g isn't meant for the benefit of consumers I wonder why it's being pushed at consumers so hard.

  postsales tracking and telemetry costs. machines can talk to each other. If your tv won't do telemetry, maybe you neighbor's device can relay your telemetry for you?

  Because vendors will sell the telemetry data. Smart TVs are also cheaper than "dumb" TVs because of that.
