Scientists find 24 'superhabitable' planets more hospitable for life than Earth
- wryoak 6y agoIf a slightly wetter climate and 5C higher temperature than Earth are considered more habitable than Earth, why are we worried about climate change at home? The world's just getting more habitable by astronomical measures
- hikerclimb 6y agoHopefully we go there and find out they are not habitable
- avmich 6y ago> A greater surface temperature, about 5C more than Earth, was also considered to be better for life. Wonder how that corresponds to Paris agreement ideas...
- perl4ever 6y agoAnother thing is that Earth is close to the upper limit of size to be practical to build rockets to get off of. Of course, a planet that's hotter and wetter presumably has more intense competition and it might be better for us if they can't achieve space travel.
- avmich 6y ago> Another thing is that Earth is close to the upper limit of size to be practical to build rockets to get off of. We have low orbital speed just below 8 km/s. A planet with another km/s extra required to get to orbit is quite likely still able to launch rockets. Then, we launch probes with total speed well above 11 km/s. While that speed is achieved over some time, which incurs gravitational losses, we can still assume that even higher low orbital speed can be achievable by chemical rockets.
- nextaccountic 6y agoLife would manage an increase of 5 degrees just fine. It's us that won't. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_temperature_record#/media/File:All_palaeotemps.svg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_temperature_record#/m...
- avmich 6y ago> It's us that won't. That's what I thought; still, the definition of habitability needs to change in rather peculiar way here.
- 8bitsrule 6y ago'superhabitable' ... 'could be habitable' ... 'may have conditions' ... headline quickly dissolves into reality. 'wetter than Earth' ... sounds like what Schiaparelli said about Mars. Eager to hear how anyone can tell us the chemistry on planets when the planets can barely be detected. This sort of story is worse than none.
- NoPicklez 6y agoTell me when you actually find life, then I might be more interested in these potentially superhabitable planets.
- blackrock 6y agoI wonder if it’s easier to terraform Venus, rather than travel to a distant planet. At least humans can live on the surface of Venus, given that the gravity is similar. But, the runaway global warming will need to be cooled first.
