According to me, and according to my professionel coder friends who work with the thing daily, it's cue tee.
Same way Tcl isn't tickle, PNG isn't ping, and LaTeX only grumplingly and with quite some self discipline on our side manages to remain la TECH. These jokes were marginally entertaining 30 years ago, tired by the turn of the century, and way past expiry today.
- lightdot 6y agoWell, it really depends on when were these jokes introduced to someone... They can hardly be marginally entertaining to someone 30 years ago if the person in question wasn't even born then! :) But they can most certainly be marginally entertaining to this person today!
- dylan604 6y agoI wasn't born when people started pronouncing Houston St in New York as "House-ton" or Rodeo Dr as "RoDayO", yet that's the accepted pronunciation so that's what gets used.
- jkaplowitz 6y agoWell, Houston St in New York is actually named after a person who called pronounced it "House-ton", not after the same Sam Houston as Houston, TX. This was the street's namesake, using an alternate spelling of the last name (spelling was in general less standardized back then): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Houstoun_(lawyer) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Houstoun_(lawyer) So, no joke involved in that case.
- balnaphone 6y agoNote for Brits and Canadians: "house-ton" is not how you pronounce Houston St in New York, it's "how-stun" (IPA /ˈhaʊstən/). In constrast, Houston TX sounds like "hew-stun" run together (IPA /ˈhjuːstən/).
- jkaplowitz 6y agoAh right, wasn't thinking of the Canadian "ou" diphthong or British vowels. Thanks for adding the IPA.
- wbl 6y agoPronouncing LaTeX like the material is pretty common in the math world; id say up to half of Berkeley math when I was there.
- apetresc 6y agoMy experience matches yours with regards to Qt, but not at all with regards to Tcl or PNG. I always hear them spoken as words rather than acronyms. Does your circle call it "S Q L" or "sequel"?
